Statistics are sets of mathematical equations that are used to analyze what is happening in the world around us. You’ve heard that today we live in the Information Age where we understand a great deal about the world around us. Much of this information was determined mathematically by using statistics. When used correctly, statistics tell us any trends in what happened in the past and can be useful in predicting what may happen in the future.

Without statistics in the world? we would have no daily weather forecasts you enjoy watching on the news, which give people an idea of what to expect from the weather for that day or period which are gotten from computer models  built using statistics that compare prior weather conditions with current weather to predict future weather. we would not be able to predict diseases and prepare for emergencies which could save lives of millions of people, there wouldn’t be medical research to bring about breakthrough in medicine, For example, studies have shown that 85 to 95 percent of lung cancers are smoking related. The statistic should tell you that almost all lung cancers are related to smoking and that if you want to have a good chance of avoiding lung cancer, you shouldn’t smoke.

Political campaigns would have no meaning and direction, whenever there’s an election, the news organizations consult their models when they try to predict who the winner is. Candidates consult voter polls to determine where and how they campaign. Statistics play a part in who your elected government officials will be.

Tracking of sales would not be possible which can have an adverse negative effect on the growth of a company,  Wal-Mart, a worldwide leading retailer, keeps track of everything they sell and use statistics to calculate what to ship to each store and when. From analyzing their vast store of information, for example, Wal-Mart decided that people buy strawberry Pop Tarts when a hurricane is predicted in Florida! So they ship this product to Florida stores based upon the weather forecast. Stock analysts also use statistical computer models to forecast what is happening in the economy. Statistics cut across all spheres of life and needed for foresight seeing in different industries.

Statistics lends credibility to these industries and makes it easier to track different things in the industry.

In our article today, we would be focusing on a specialized field in statistics that has an high impact in health and medicine BIO-STATISTICS.

One important use of biostatistics is helping people to prevent certain diseases by knowing their risk. Doctors and scientists use statistics to determine how likely it is for someone to develop a disease. For example, Americans have about a 40.2 percent risk of developing diabetes at some point in their lifetime. Scientists and doctors determine these statistics through medical research.

Biostatistics is a specialized branch of the statistics field that collects and examines data related to living things.

Biostatisticians analyze data and statistics on living things collected during medical research studies to draw conclusions or make predications. They may also contribute to the design and execution of research studies in collaboration with other statisticians and scientists. During the execution of the clinical trial, some may monitor how the study is conducted to ensure that the integrity of the results won’t be compromised. Writing research proposals and conveying their findings to the scientific community is another important part of their job. Some Biostatisticians may also teach at universities while conducting their research.

Performing fieldwork and collecting data is also an important aspect of the job.

The job demand for Biostatisticians is expected to grow 22% in the next 10 years, which is much faster than other professions. These kinds of statisticians are increasingly needed in the medical field, particularly in the pharmaceutical industry where they can help conduct research and run clinical trials for innovative medicines and health technologies.

The following is a list of abilities and skills required as a biostatistican.

• Have expert knowledge of statistics, mathematics, and computer science to analyze large data sets
• Engage in data extraction, storage, initial analysis, and delivery to users
• Participate in the planning stages of research, as well as the data collection and interpretation stages. Lead the implementation, analysis and interpretation of studies within the scope of the project
• Link to and develop complex databases and data analysis programs
• Develop analysis plans and methodologies, as well as conduct analysis of datasets
• Develop new algorithms, statistical techniques, and visualization approaches so that workgroup, and stakeholders can implement findings
• Provide statistical expertise and peer teaching to internal and external partners
• Construct and critique scientific manuscripts and grant applications
• Prioritize tasks within a given framework; meet agreed-upon milestones and timelines independently and collaboratively.

As a teenager, you should concentrate very much in maths class, study lots of topics in statistics, you could even get a textbook in statistics and create a special study time for it to be fully prepared. We also recommend that you concentrate in your ICT classes in school, take a course outside school on ICT and begin developing that skill. This recommendations is not for you to ignore other subjects taught in school, this is because you also need knowledge from other subjects to make statistics meaningful. You need good command of English to be able to prepare and present your researches.
